Our Mission

The Bronx Reentry Working Group is a coalition of returning citizens, friends, and family members supporting each other through community reintegration. The objectives of BRWG are:

  1. To improve the health and well-being of returning citizens  by providing appropriate supports and service referrals.
  2. To increase skills and knowledge of returning citizens through programming, education, and advocacy strategies.
  3. To increase information sharing and exchange, expand community engagement, and foster relationships within and between coalition members and returning citizens.

The Bronx Reentry Working Group is moderated by Pamela Amie Valera, PhD, ACSW, Department of Sociomedical Sciences at the Mailman School of Columbia University, Columbia University and Ramon Semorile, Crew Supervisor of Bronx Community Solutions. The group has active subcommittees working on the following projects:

Community Forum Planning Subcommittee: This subcommittee plans an annual community forum “What Next … I’m Home” The forum may be hosted in other areas in the Bronx.

Support Group Chairs: Cary Grant (carygrant325@gmail.com) and Ramon Semorile (RSEMORIL@courts.state.ny.us). This support group meets twice per month to help returning citizens cope with the challenges to community reintegration.

Research Subcommittee: This subcommittee will use community-based participatory research methods to examine the challenges of re-entry to the Bronx community after incarceration in jail or prison, and to assess the potential utility of various policies and programs intended to improve the quality and coordination of supportive services for returning citizens.
